Rediscovering True Beauty in a Trend Driven Makeup World

For the first time in my artistic career, I felt a disconnect with the beauty industry I have loved and served for over 22 years.

Recently, I did a makeup trial for a young bride who had never had her makeup professionally done before. She came with a clear vision shaped by TikTok trends, asking for a look that was modern, bold, and very specific. The inspirational photos she shared were all different, and they did not represent her skin tone. I shared this concern and we collaborated on colors that she wanted to incorporate.

I spent three hours with, well beyond the traditional 90-minute allotted time for a trial, trying to bring her vision to life. Yet, despite all the effort, the styles she wanted felt too far removed from my own artistic approach. This experience made me reflect deeply on where the beauty industry is heading and what it means for artists like me who value authenticity and timeless elegance. I am so grateful to this young bride, who helped me truly see which side of artistry I am committing too and to speak clearly about the professional style I bring.

As a professional artist nearing 50 years of age, it's more important now than ever to be clear about what real beauty means to me - because that connection is what will make my work even more rewarding. The message I am hoping to leave here is to honor where you are in your own season of life and to serve a clientele that may share similar visions.

The Rise of Trend-Driven Makeup

The beauty world is currently dominated by a wave of trends that emphasize dramatic contouring, sculpted cheekbones, lifted features, and a “snatched” look. These styles often involve heavy makeup layers, fake lashes, intense highlighting, and sometimes even altering the natural shape of the face. While these trends are popular among younger generations, they can feel overwhelming and artificial, especially for those with mature skin or a preference for subtlety.

This shift toward a more exaggerated, almost mask-like makeup style has become so widespread that it sometimes overshadows the true essence of beauty. Instead of enhancing natural features, the focus is on transforming the face into something almost unrecognizable. This trend-driven approach can make people look like someone else rather than the best version of themselves.

Why Authentic Beauty Matters

As a makeup artist who spent countless hours poring over the teachings of iconic educators like Kevyn Aucoin, Bobbi Brown, Linda Mason, and Gucci Westman, my philosophy has always been to enhance natural beauty. My goal is to create a flawless look that feels true to the individual, not to follow fleeting trends that may not suit every face or personality.

Authentic beauty is about clean skin, radiant eyes, and a glow that comes from within. It’s about highlighting what makes each person unique rather than covering it up. This approach respects the natural aging process and works with the skin’s texture and tone instead of fighting against it.

Challenges of Modern Trends for Mature Skin

Many of the current makeup trends are designed with younger skin in mind. Heavy contouring and thick layers of product can settle into fine lines and wrinkles, making mature skin look less vibrant. Overuse of highlighter and fake lashes can feel unnatural and uncomfortable for those who prefer a more understated look.

For clients with more mature skin, I focus on techniques that enhance their natural features without masking them. This includes:

  • Using foundations that allow the skin to breathe

  • Applying subtle contouring that adds dimension without harsh lines

  • Emphasizing the eyes with soft, natural shadows instead of heavy lashes

  • Choosing lip colors that complement the skin tone without overpowering it

This approach creates a timeless, elegant look that feels comfortable and authentic.

Staying True to Artistic Values

While I have updated my skills to understand and execute current trends, I have decided not to make them the center of my work. I want to honor the legacy of the artists who inspired me throughout my career, to those who believed in makeup as a tool to express truth and individuality, not conformity. To me, they remain the true teachers of our time.

If you are searching for real beauty and a makeup artist who values your unique features, look for someone who resists the pressure to follow every trend. Artists who focus on enhancing your natural beauty will give you a look that feels genuine and timeless.

Practical Tips for Choosing the Right Makeup Style

If you feel overwhelmed by the trend-driven makeup world, here are some tips to help you find a style that suits you:

  • Know your skin type and age: Choose makeup techniques that work with your skin’s texture and tone.

  • Focus on enhancing, not masking: Look for artists who prioritize natural beauty over heavy contouring or caking on products.

  • Communicate your preferences clearly: Share what you like and dislike about makeup looks you see online or in magazines.

  • Be open to professional advice: A skilled artist will guide you toward styles that flatter your features and feel comfortable.

  • Avoid trends that feel forced: If a look doesn’t feel like you, it probably isn’t the right choice, no matter how popular it is.

The Future of Makeup Artistry

The beauty industry will continue to evolve, with new trends emerging regularly. Yet, there will always be a place for makeup that celebrates real beauty and individuality. Artists who stay true to this vision will help preserve the artistry and integrity of makeup as a form of self-expression. As an artist, this is the side I stand on.

For those who want a flawless, authentic look, seek out artists who value timeless elegance over passing fads. Together, we can keep the spirit of genuine beauty alive.
