There is different work for us to do now as we exit from warmer weather, salty beach days, camping, seasonal foods, and the adventures that come along with it. We begin to enter into an entirely new feeling and mindset.
Preparing for change- Emerging from Summer to Fall
In Ayurveda, spring and summer are referred to as Doshas. This Dosha (there are three) is PITA, which is fiery and warming to the mind, body, and spirit. We eat cooler foods to balance this natural inner flame that keeps our energy strong and in alignment with the sun.
In the fall months, we move into drier, colder, and lighter energies. This is referred to as VATA. Our systems change and we choose foods to keep us hydrated and warm. This may include warming teas, meat and eggs, and healthy oils such as ghee and avocado oil, mung beans, squash, carrots, and sweet potatoes.
As we enter these cooler months, our spirit craves cozier, richer, aromatic, soothing, and balanced living. Our bodies store more energy and we naturally slow down to prepare for wintering. Our nervous systems settle and we entice our senses with sights of pumpkins, and tastes of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. It is a desirable time of year!
We tend to nest in our homes and set up our kitchens and cupboards with root vegetables, bone broth, and fire cider. We share stories with friends, and reminisce of times past.
We stock our shelves from the bounties of summer with canned fruits, jams, and veggies. We decorate our feet with fuzzy socks and live in cozy, oversized sweaters. Some prepare wood for the fireplace, while others work on cleaning up their attics, sorting through old books, and looking forward to earlier bedtimes and the natural rhythms and routines of the fall and wintering months.
Now is a good time to dry your herbs from your garden and hang them in your kitchen for stews and crockpot meals.
We think ahead.
Fall is an excellent time to begin or elaborate on a Conscious Living lifestyle. I often clean out my cupboards and restock them with hydrating facial oils, homemade soaps, natural cleaning products, and body oils from my shop. I reset my tea cabinets, donate clothing, invest in holistic classes, and enjoy time to write and create. I love getting under the blankets with a cup of Earl Grey and a good book. Lazy Sundays take on a new meaning in the cooler months.
Each year, I prepare and set the stage for a cozy, conscious home.
*Dust the cobwebs, clean the gutters, and wash the doors.
*Set the tables with apples, pomegranates, and dried oranges.
*Place a simmering pot of cinnamon and clove on the stove.
It's how I create sacred space for Conscious Living.
We discover traditions old and new and look forward to All Hallow's Eve and the Autumnal Equinox. There is such excitement in the air when we align with these portals of change.
With winter not far away (that Dosha is Kapha) our bodies continue to change and reset.
We set ourselves up now for success and slower living.
